New Garage Doors for Improved Security

07/10/2018

Sometimes when people are intent on improving the security of their homes, they neglect seemingly peripheral items, like the garage door. However, the garage door is not merely a peripheral item with no impact on the overall security of your home. In fact, one way to improve your home’s security may be to update to a more secure garage door. There are a few things to keep in mind when updating to a more secure garage door.

For one, the material of the door itself matters. A thicker, heavier material is harder to break into and can be more of a deterrent to potential burglars. Additionally, the garage door can come with different locking systems. The three most popular systems are probably keypad, remote, and mechanical. There are some advantages and disadvantages to each of these systems, and of course the effectiveness of each depends on the quality of whichever kind of lock you choose to purchase.

Mechanical locks were standard for many years and are probably still the most common, but most of those mechanical locks are of low quality and are somewhat easy for burglars to break or even pick. The most secure of these systems is probably the keypad, because it can be connected to a more encompassing home security system. However, some people are turned off by the idea of having to memorize a pin; for these people a garage door with a remote locking system may be ideal.

Whatever your security needs and desired level of comfort, there is a garage door for you, and upgrading to a more secure garage door may be the best step for you to take to improve your overall level of home security. Don’t let your garage door be your house’s weakness.
