Our 7 Garage Door Maintenance Tips for You

Garages are a great tool and addition for homes in the Westchester area.  Many homes in Westchester are historic and uniquely designed, causing them to require a lot of care. Maintaining your garage doors is no exception!

Here are some important tips to assist you in your garage door maintenance:

Make sure the garage door opener control button is out of the reach of small children.

It’s important if you have children to keep all control mechanisms at far reach from them. Do not let children play with garage door remote controls. Anything can go wrong if a child has access to opening and closing the garage door.

Inspect the garage door each month.

Be sure to look at the springs, cables, rollers, and pulleys for signs of wear. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. If you find any problems, contact a trained door repairman who can make adjustments to these parts.

Test the Garage Door Openers

Every month, you should test your garage door openers to see if you notice your garage door is struggling to open and close. This is crucial, especially during the winter months, since the cold temperatures can affect the door openers with possible freezing or rust during heavy rains.

Do not leave the garage door partially open.

When the garage door is activated again, it may travel downward and come in contact with an object in its path. This is something to watch out for, because it impacts your home’s security. You want to make sure you have a clear space for when it’s time to close your garage door. If it is left even partially open when you’re unaware, it leaves your home prone to intruders.

Unplug the garage door opener when you are not home.

This is especially crucial if you are gone long term, like on vacation. There typically is a unit that you can unplug, or you can use a vacation lock console security switch that you can turn on, which renders remotes unusable. This is an optional accessory to most openers.

If your garage opener does not have rolling-code technology, be sure to change the access code on the opener or remote control. This code changes each time the opener is used, to prevent code grabbing. It’s also a good idea to consider investing in a newer model with more safety and security features that are now standard.

Make sure your home is secure.

A common trend in home invasion these days is gaining access to the home they are trying to break into. Never leave the remote control in the car or with a parking attendant. It’s important to consider using a key chain remote. You should always lock the entry to the inside of your home right away – especially if your opener is programmed to your car as well.
