Replacing garage doors on your own can be a difficult, tedious process. At Henry B. Whitaker Garage Doors, we offer professional garage door installation services. Our trained technicians are able to install custom garage doors, residential doors, and commercial doors while following strict safety standards. Here are the steps we follow when installing your garage door:
1. Assemble and Mount the Carriage Tube
To begin your garage door installation, we will remove your existing garage door if necessary. After establishing our working area, we will assemble the carriage tube. The carriage tube allows the carriage to travel from the power unit to the front wall of your garage, raising and lowering the garage door.
Our technicians assemble and mount the carriage tube according to the manufacturer’s instructions. All carriage tubes are fitted to the proper length of your chosen garage door. Once the tube is securely attached, the carriage is mounted.
2. Mount the Header Bracket
The header bracket, where the garage door is mounted, secures the carriage tube to the wall above the door. The mounting location may vary depending on the garage door you have selected, but most header brackets are placed above the center of the door. After the header bracket is secure, the carriage tube with the mounted carriage is connected to the bracket.
3. Hang the Power Unit
Most garage door power units hang from the ceiling on angle irons and metal straps. Technicians will test the garage door several times to check that it clears the door frame and the power unit mount. Wires run from the power unit to the opener control box, so garage doors can be raised or lowered at the press of a button. Most control boxes are installed in an easy-to-reach location, usually beside the door leading into your home. At your request, an additional opener control box with a keypad can be placed on the outside of the garage.
4. Connect the Carriage Arm
The metal carriage arm extends from the carriage and connects to a bracket mounted on the garage door. As the carriage moves along the tube, the arm pulls the door open and closed. Most carriage arms are equipped with an emergency release system, often attached to a rope, that disconnects the opening mechanism from the motor. This allows users to open and close the door manually.
5. Install the Safety System
To comply with the law, all garage door units are equipped with a safety device. The safety device automatically shuts down the motor if something obstructs the path of the door while it is closing. Two sensors emit a beam of light across the garage’s threshold. If anything breaks the beam while the garage door is in motion, the door will stop and rise once more. Active safety sensors display a small light.
