Garage Door Gear Replacement
07/10/2018
If your garage door opener is not working properly, you may need to have the gear assembly replaced. There are a series of gears and sprockets inside the motor housing of your garage door opener. One of these is a metal or sometimes, nylon gear that is in operation anytime the garage door is being opened or lowered. If the gear is stripped your garage door won’t open or close properly until the gear is replaced.
Proper garage door maintenance is often overlooked as long as the door works properly, because it’s something easily taken for granted. Typically when these gears are made of metal they require regular applications of oil lubricant, but if the gears are made of plastic, lubricant will just degrade them, causing them to wear faster than normal. Many of the nylon gears are designed to strip when other issues are at fault, like weak springs which have lost tension over time, blown bearings and worn out rollers are at fault, causing the motor to work harder than it should and stripping gears. The plastic gear strips and in turn many instances, saves the more expensive parts like motor and circuit board from being possibly damaged.
